1. What the law is
Narcotics Act No. 65/1974; Regulation No. 233/2001 on habit-forming and narcotic substances (lists psilocybin and psilocin as prohibited controlled substances)1
Iceland's controlled-substances table names psilocin and psilocybin and draws no line between fresh and dried material, so picking is not exempt. Possession is a criminal offense, as are sale and cultivation, under the Narcotics Act No. 65/1974 and Regulation No. 233/2001. A cross-party proposal in 2022 asked the Minister of Health to prepare for research into medical use. No law followed.
2. Pending legislation
No bill is on file in Iceland that would change this record, as of the 16 Aug 2026 review.
3. History
The laws behind today’s status, when each took effect, and every review since, in order.
Iceland had been recorded as mixed on the theory that freshly picked mushrooms fell outside the ban. Regulation 233/2001 draws no such line, so the status was corrected to illegal.
Iceland's entry was checked again against the regulation that lists the substances. It bans psilocybin and psilocin outright, with no exception for freshly picked mushrooms, exactly as the entry says.
